Okay. Not that I’m a big Palm guy or anything. In fact, I hate Palm. I’ve always hated Palm. I’ve always thought they were clunky and ugly. Especially since they were all monochrome at the time. I sorta put them into that category with pocket organizers that were all the rage in the mid 90’s. And by all the rage I mean totally sucked and took more time to use than was worth it. But then, this isn’t about me.

It seems that Apple might have been mismatched with service partner AT&T. Now I’ve always thought that AT&T did a pretty decent job with my home phone and my Internet service (Yes I’m a DSL holdout.) Apparently they don’t do such a fine job with their cellular service. I for one was starting to become a fan of the iPhone and all those wonderful Apps available for it. But I do have an generation 2 iPod Touch which runs all those same apps over wifi which I have.

When I was on vacation last week I met my friend and a bunch of his IT work friends. They all had smart-phones. What was their phone of choice? A Treo. Oh yes. The Treo is not dead. Sure there were a couple iPhones in the group. However there was some buyer’s remorse. Not over the phone itself. No, over the lousy service and customer support they were getting from their carrier. The only carrier that supports the iPhone.

It seems like more and more people I talk to are shying away from Apple’s phone and finding alternatives for their application needs. Included in this was a netbook running linux that couple emulate Palm OS. People are getting creative and alternatives are getting better.  Apple’s proved our need for handheld gimmicks that are actually useful and now Palm thinks they have one that truly works. Though I’m a bit late in saying this. Let the showdown begin.
